Medical shows often grab our attention even if we don't want them to. There's something about the drama of life and death situations that draws us in. For myself, I believe it is the desire to be prepared for anything. If I've watched a scene where someone is walked through performing a tracheotomy by a 911 dispatcher, I feel somehow that I'm prepared at least to have confidence if that emergency arises. I'm sure however if I was actually called upon to be the ad-hoc doctor, I would not be so confident. I can hear the thoughts even now. "What if I cut an artery? What if there's blood? What if I pass out and can't finish?" The only way Woukd be to listen and do what the dispatcher said without thinking or worrying about what's next. I may know where the steps are headed, but it's better for all involved if I just focus on following what I'm told.
I was thinking about how important it is to have that mind set in the Christian walk. It is after all the example set by Jesus. He knew He was headed for the Cross, yet He only did day to day what the Father instructed Him to do. There was a plan, there was a purpose and a divinely orchestrated series of actions to occur, but all in order, perfectly executed by perfect obedience. Sounds like a blueprint for handling life's present and future emergencies.
